Place Royale is the birthplace of French civilization in America. The first house was built by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. This square became the nerve center of trade for the new colony, and its name, Place Royale, was officially given to it in 1686 with the installation of a bust of King Louis XIV. From 1960 to 1980, a large restoration project restored its 18th-century appearance.
